The environment of most counties in the region is rural in nature and the amenities found in most urbanized areas, such as public transportation, street lights, and paid fire departments are usually not available.

The communities are not densely settled and their location, in most cases, is the result of agriculture, lumbering, or recreational, occupational and service industries.
