Population

Population centers are located in Redding, with a population of 125,000, and the Chico area with a population of approximately 82,500.

The remainder of the residents live in small-to-medium size towns, with populations from under 1,000 to about 10,000, widely scattered over both incorporated and unincorporated areas.

Population figures per square mile in each county demonstrate the sparse nature of the area. The population in each county is clustered in at least one or two major towns with smaller clusters and isolated areas found throughout each county. The average population density throughout the area is a relatively low 16.5 persons per square mile.
