Population

Residents in the six county region live in small-to-medium size towns, with populations from under 1,000 to about 30,000, widely scattered over both incorporated and unincorporated areas.

Population figures per square mile in each county demonstrate the sparse nature of the area. The population in each county is clustered in at least one or two major towns with smaller clusters and isolated areas found throughout each county.

The average population density throughout the area is a relatively low 6.4 persons per square mile.
