Region

The Nor-Cal EMS region encompasses an area of over 33,000 square miles with a permanent population in excess of 550,000.

This vast area represents approximately twenty-two percent (22%) of the state’s territory, but less than two percent (2%) of its population. Located within the Nor-Cal EMS region are two trauma centers, five Emergency Departments Approved for Trauma (EDATs) and fifteen base and/or receiving hospitals. Field delivery of emergency medical services is provided by 37 ambulance services, and over 200 public safety agencies (with over 1,000 certified first responders) which provide basic first response services. The scarcity of advanced life support (ALS) services contributes to the region’s dependency on the first responder. Together, these agencies assume a coordinated level of care for over 42,000 emergency responses annually.
