Since the revised Trauma Regulations were released in August of 1999,
and recognized the inclusive system design, Nor-Cal EMS was enabled to
re-designate its Emergency Departments Approved for Trauma to line up
with the specific criteria for Trauma Centers as listed in the regulation.
Trauma Center Types Serving the Northstate
Level II Trauma Centers
The Level II Trauma Center is the lead center in the Northstate.
They provide well-staffed Emergency departments, a group of skilled surgeons,
sub-specialists, and all the necessary support services and equipment
to care for the seriously injured trauma patient on a 24-hour basis. This
includes monitoring all phases of care from pre hospital transport to
rehabilitation. The Level II Trauma Centers also spearhead efforts to provide
trauma education and prevention in the region, thereby working to reduce
the incidence of traumatized patients.
Level III Trauma Centers
The Level III Trauma Center has an organized trauma team and a surgeon
on-call, but may not have the full service capability and subspecialty
back up availability as the Level II Trauma Centers. Many trauma patients
may be kept locally in their community by these facilities providing definitive
care to the level of resources available to their facility. They are facilities
that are integrated formally into the trauma system through transfer agreements,
transfer guidelines, and participation in data collection and quality
assurance efforts.
Level IV Trauma Centers
The Level IV Trauma Center has an organized trauma team and may or may
not have a surgeon on-call. They are facilities that provide critical
access into the trauma system and facilitate the transfer of the trauma
patient to a higher level of care. The Level IV centers are integrated
formally into the trauma system through transfer agreements, transfer
guidelines and participation in data collection and quality assurance
efforts.
