Redwoods and Rivers Rafting Company in conjunction with the Downriver Volunteer Fire Company held a Swift Water Awareness class on Saturday September 14 in Del Loma. Members from Downriver VFC, ENLOE Hospital, Weaverville VFD, Hyampom VFD, Coffee Creek FVD and Blue Lake VFD attended the day long class. The class started with lecture and videos, then lectures on getting to know the equipment. Then it was time to practice with the ropes on the lawn area of Redwoods and Rivers.

After the lunch put on by the Downriver VFC Board, it was time to get wet. The volunteers donned their wet suits, helmets and floatation devices to get some hands on training in the Trinity River.

The hands on training included negotiating an area of fast water, rope rescue techniques, rescue swimmer techniques and finally dealing with a “strainer”.

All participants left with a good understanding of the dangers of water rescue of all types and a renewed respect for the river. More of this type of training will be offered in the future. For more information on advanced training, contact Redwoods and Rivers at 1-800-429-0090
