EMT 2010 Requirements

Nor-Cal EMS will keep our website updated on the progress and implementation of the state's project "EMT 2010".

What is EMT 2010?

EMT 2010, another name for the Assembly Bill 2917 which passed in 2008, imposes new certification requirements on EMT's - all EMT's are required to be certified through the State as of July 1, 2010. California Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) has established a website that provides project updates and requirements to assist with the implementation of this new regulation:

Highlights of EMT 2010

  • As of July 1, 2010, all certifying Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) and Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMT's) shall be fingerprinted, Department of Justice (DOJ) Live Scan, for state and federal background checks as a condition of certification.
  • All EMTs and AEMTs must have a DOJ Contract for Subsequent Arrest Notification.
  • EMTs and AEMTs that met the "grandfather" criteria by June 25, 2010 were eligible for inclusion into the central registry.
  • EMTs and AEMTs that did not meet the grandfather requirement have to complete the DOJ Live Scan criminal background check and Subsequent Arrest Notification Service at the time of recertification.
  • EMSA established a central registry of EMT and AEMT certification data. Portions of the registry data allow public access.
  • Nor-Cal's on line certification and recertification contain all necessary information and forms to complete these processes.
  • The additional fees ($37 or $75) instituted by the State have to be collected by Nor-Cal EMS for the state. Nor-Cal's fees have not changed.
  • New Disciplinary Action Regulations implemented.
  • Only one EMT or AEMT certification shall be issued by one certifying entity per certification period and shall be valid statewide.
